Join us as we come together to honor Earth Day with activities focused on sustainability, community engagement, and environmental awareness. This annual event is a great opportunity to learn simple ways to reduce our impact, connect with others who care about the planet, and take part in hands‑on efforts that support a healthier environment. All are welcome—let’s make a positive difference together!
Scheduled events
Earth Day Morning Bird Walk (Ages 13+)- Saturday, April 18 (8:30 am & 9 am)
Celebrate Earth Day with a morning walk on Tubbs Hill and enjoy the sights and sounds of birds. The Coeur d’Alene Audubon Society will conduct a guided birding tour of the east side of Tubbs Hill. We will lead two groups, one at 8:30 and one at 9, starting at the bird sign at the east trailhead on the south- east side of Tubbs Hill (11th Street). The tour will last approximately an hour and a half. Binoculars are recommended and please no pets or children under the age of seven.
Earth Day Family Storytime – Saturday, April 18 (10 am)
Celebrate our beautiful planet with a special story time to kick off the library’s Earth Day event. Join the Children’s Librarian outside to enjoy rhymes, songs, and stories that highlight ways we should appreciate and protect the natural world. Story time will be followed by an upcycled craft! Afterward, families can stick around for Saturday with the Symphony and the rest of the library’s fun Earth Day festivities!
Earth Day with the Symphony: A Children’s Program (Ages 3+) – Saturday, April 18 (11 am)
Children 3 and older can enjoy “Saturday with the Symphony” during the Library’s Earth Day event. The free music education program is coordinated by the Coeur d’Alene Symphony Orchestra and recurs the third Saturday of each month. The music-filled hour typically includes a fun musical performance, an interactive activity and a book reading by the children’s librarian. Past musical performances have included traditional classical music, jazz, pop and world music. Come for a lively morning of musical enrichment.
Book Repair Café (All Ages) – Saturday, April 18 (10-2 pm)
Save a worn book from the dumpster! Bring a book with a broken spine to the library, during KEA’s Earth Day Celebration, and we’ll glue it back together for you while you browse the event. (The symptoms of a broken spine may include a split in the text block, pages falling out, or a detached cover.) While an experienced library worker will be overseeing repairs, and every effort will be made to leave a book in better condition than it arrives, please don’t bring anything too precious or costly. (Before repairs can begin, a waiver must be signed, acknowledging that repairs will be performed for free by volunteers at the owner’s risk.) Don’t just replace it — repair it!
Interested in being a repair volunteer for potential future repair cafés? Swing by and let us know. Interested in being a teen volunteer for the Earth Day event? Let our teen librarian know.
Green Screen Film Series – Saturday, April 18 (2 pm)
Join us for a special Earth Day feature of the Green Screen Film Series, a thought provoking and audience engaging event series hosted by Kootenai Environmental Alliance. Each month, we’ll share an environmental based film to provide insight and start a conversation about how to approach these topics locally. To close out our Earth Day celebration, join us in watching Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry. This film is a documentary that explores the shifting values of rural America through the lens of author and farmer Wendell Berry’s agrarian philosophy. The film contrasts traditional land stewardship with the impacts of modern industrial agriculture by blending Berry’s own words with interviews from his Kentucky community.
