Summer Reading Log

How-To

Dig into reading all summer long. Grab a Reading Log from the Library to track your reading time and earn prizes along the way.

  • Mark off one shovel for every 20 minutes you read, or are read to. Read anything you enjoy: books, audiobooks, magazines, or eBooks.
    • Earning prizes: For every 4 hours of reading completed, bring your log to the library.
    • Kids (3-12), Teens (12-19), and Adults (18+) each earn either a prize or a drawing ticket, depending on your age group.
  • Goal: Read up to 16 total hours to complete the program and unearth all available rewards.
  • Turn in or show your log at the library to claim prizes or tickets as you go.
  • Adults (18+) can also track their reading online
  • Drawings held August 31
  • One log per person, per summer

Stomp, Chomp, and Roar! Reading Hour June 16 – August 14 (9 & 11 am)

Get ready for a dino-mite storytime series this summer at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library! We will discover prehistoric wonders through silly songs, reptile rhymes, dinosaur dances, and super tall tales. Join us each week to see which larger-than-life dinosaur hatches a story to help us explore features like long necks, big teeth, spikes, horns, flippers, tails, wings, and more! While the baby and toddler storytimes are followed by a stay-and-play opportunity, the preschool program includes a fun craft afterward.

Prehistoric Pals (Ages 5-8) – Tuesdays, June 16 to August 11 (11 am) in Community Room

Step into a world of giant footprints, roaring predators, and shaggy Ice Age giants! This dino-packed program will travel millions of years into the past to uncover intriguing facts about creatures that survived long before humans existed. Each week will include exciting stories, hands-on fun, imagination, and friends.

Subterranean Tales – Wednesdays, June 24 to August 5 (10 am) at Higgens Point

Unearth a story with the library at Higgens Point State Park! You’ll marvel at the beautiful setting, but our focus will be on the bounty of natural wonders found beneath the forest floor. This is a destination program for families that love getting outdoors to enjoy nature. Amazing stories of underground adventures, fun activities, and hands-on projects will be inspired by extraordinary things that hide below the Earth’s surface. While all ages are welcome, this program is designed for ages 4-10. Participants should allow time to hike an easy third-of-a-mile (paved) trail from the Higgens Point parking lot (at the end of E. Coeur d’Alene Lake Dr) up to the picnic shelter where storytime will take place. We’re excited that at the culmination of this program in August, families will receive a special copy of “The Dirt Book: Poems About Animals That Live Beneath Our Feet” by David L. Harrison!

Jurassic Bark (All Ages) – Wednesdays, June 17 through August 12 (2 pm)

Join us on Wednesday afternoons this summer to practice reading to a real, live therapy dog! This is the perfect program for children who are working on building their reading confidence or who love sharing books with a furry friend. These dogs love to hear stories and are ready to help you become the best reader you can be!

Colossal Events

  • The Reptile Man Experience (All Ages) – Friday, June 19 (2 pm) PET AN ALLIGATOR! HOLD A PYTHON! READ A BOOK! Help us kick off the Library’s Summer Reading Program with a special presentation from zoologist, educator, and author, Scott Petersen. He’ll introduce 12 live reptiles in a 40-minute show that teaches the importance of all animals in nature. The Reptile Man has been featured nationally on Disney’s Bill Nye the Science Guy and on PBS’ Biz Kids. After the show, Summer Reading Logs will be available for kids, teens, and adults! Sink your teeth into the challenge by checking out a selection of reptilian reads, then craft a Brontosaurus Bookmark to mark your page.
  • Tea-Rex Party (All Ages) – Saturday, July 25 (10 am) in Community Room – Join us for a roaring good time where sophistication meets extinction! Expect to fashion reptilian party hats, sip from Tyrannosaurus cups, nibble tasty treats, hear dino-stories, and have some unforgettable Jurassic fun. All ages are welcome, but activities will be geared towards ages 4-8 and their caregivers.
  • Bingosaurus Bash (All Ages) – Friday, August 14 (5 pm) in Community Room – Calling all families to enjoy the classic game of BINGO combined with the gigantic excitement of dinosaurs! Snack, laugh, roar, and shout “BINGO!” All ages are welcome, but activities will be geared towards ages 4-8 and their caregivers.

Veloci-Chapter Book Club (Ages 9-12) – Wednesdays, June 24, July 22, & August 19 (2 pm)

Journey underground and discover the excitement of the prehistoric world… one chapter at a time! Find adventure and friendship this summer with the library’s Veloci-Chapter Book Club! We’ll meet up one Wednesday of each month to discuss the story, and enjoy a snack and activity inspired by the book. A limited number of copies of each juvenile novel will be available from the children’s library one month before the scheduled book club meeting. A commitment to attend the book club program is required to receive a book.

Fossil Flicks (All Ages) – Tuesdays, June 9 & August 25 (2 pm)

Cool down this summer by joining us for popcorn and a family movie on the big screen in the Community Room. Both featured films are animated prehistoric adventures that follow young characters on dangerous journeys through ancient worlds. These heartwarming stories are full of exciting action, clever humor, and important themes of courage, responsibility, and kindness.

Behemoth Blue Blocks – Thursdays, June 11 & August 27 (1-3 pm)

While weekly programs aren’t scheduled in early June and late August, come to the library to play with our collection of Big Blue Blocks! We’re going to set out oodles of giant building blocks for kids of all ages to create whatever they’d like during this nonstructured play opportunity in the children’s library.

Saturday with the Symphony: A Children’s Program (3+yo) – Saturdays, June 20, July 18, and August 15 (11 am)

Come enjoy a morning of musical enrichment at the library! This free music education program is coordinated by the Coeur d’Alene Symphony Orchestra and recurs on the third Saturday of each month. This upbeat hour is sure to entertain all ages and allow participants to experience the joy of making music! A correlating storybook will also be read by the children’s librarian.

StoryWalk® in the Parks

Stroll through McEuen Park this summer while reading “When You Find the Right Rock” by Mary Lyn Ray. Each page of the book is posted alongside a path that stretches from the library to the playground. The Library’s Higgens Point State Park StoryWalk® will feature “Tiny Dino” by Deborah Freedman.

Summer Scavenger Hunts

Explore the children’s library this summer by searching for hidden clues. After completing the scavenger hunt, you’ll receive a small prize from the checkout desk!

Help decide what the library does for teens and the community. Learn how to advocate and support causes you care about. Make friends who care about teens and the community. Become part of the Teen Leadership Council (TLC)!

Adult/All Ages Weekly/Biweekly Programs

Yoga for You! (Ages 18+) – Most Mondays and Fridays (9:30 am)

Join us for this Yoga program for adults. This blend of stretching, strengthening and balance work, along with relaxation, may be just what you’re looking for. Come enjoy the many benefits of this ancient practice! Your instructor, Gerry Bryak, will adapt poses to your needs so this yoga is truly for YOU! All levels are welcome, from beginners to experienced. Please bring a mat to class.

Tai Chi & Qi Gong (Ages 18+) – Tuesdays in June and August (9:30 am)

Improve strength, balance, coordination, focus, breathwork and relaxation, all while exploring different movements from Tai Chi and Qi Gong styles. All movements can be done within your own comfort zone and mobility level. No special equipment or clothing needed, wear what is comfortable for you. Avoid wearing flip flops or slides. Chairs will be available for those that need to sit or use for extra balance. This program is for anyone at any age and any ability level. Your instructor Christine brings over 25 years of experience in teaching and sharing Tai Chi and Qi Gong.Find us in the Community Room.

Stronger in Body & Mind (Ages 16+) – Wednesdays, June 3 & 10, July 1, 8, 15, & 29, August 5, 12, & 19 (9:30 am)

Low-impact fitness & strength training class for all levels of strength. Feel stronger, fitter, refreshed and more focused! Jeannette, a trainer with over a decade of experience, will guide you to work at your own personal level, with modifications as needed. Whole body workout, using dumbbells, body weights, and simple resistance training. We’ll add a bit of cardio, flexibility and finish with a guided mindfulness practice.

*It is recommended to please bring a pair of light weights/dumbbells, a mat and a bottle of water! Find us in the Community Room.

Sit-n-Stitch (Ages 12+) – Wednesdays (11 am)

New to crochet and knitting? Always wanted to learn? Want to come and craft with some friendly faces? Join us every Wednesday for our crochet Sit-n-Stitch! Materials, patterns, and project help will be provided. All skill levels are welcome, feel free to bring your own handwork projects!

Community Sew-In (All-Ages)– Thursdays (12-3 pm)

Join us in our weekly sewing sessions! Are you working on a quilting project and want to connect with fellow enthusiasts? Come along and socialize, ask for advice, or whatever else you might need. Don’t forget to bring your sewing machine (or your hand-sewing materials), your fabric, your extension cord, and your enthusiasm for sewing! Meet us in the Community Room and let’s get creative.

Step into Summer with Tai Chi Walking (Ages 18+) – Fridays May 29 – June 26 (12-1 pm)

In this gentle indoor practice, you’ll learn slow mindful balanced walking inspired by the ancient art of Tai Chi. These Tai Chi walking patterns are designed to enhance stability, improve coordination, reduce stress, and to help you reconnect with your natural rhythm. No special equipment or experience is required—just wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for movement. Led in a friendly, supportive environment, this program is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Come for one week or join us every week to discover the benefits of Tai Chi Walking.

Scribbler’s Society Writing Club (Ages 18+) – Mondays, June 8 & 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24 (2 & 5 pm)

Join fellow writers for an hour of brainstorming, critiquing, and inspiration — in-person every 2nd and 4th Monday from 2-3 and 5-6 in the Gozzer Room. All skill levels and genres welcome. Geared toward adults.

Adult/All Ages Special Programs

Rock Swap (All-Ages) June-August

Bring a rock, take a rock. Visit the library for a rock swap where participants can drop off one rock and choose a new one to take home. Rocks should be no larger than the size of a palm. Painted and decorated rocks are welcome. We will provide a small slip of paper so participants can share a short note about why their rock is special. This casual, self guided program is a fun way to share creativity and discover a new little treasure.

Realtor in the Library (Ages 18+) – Wednesdays, June 3, July 1, & August 5 (4-6 pm)

Curious About the Real Estate Market? Thinking about buying, selling, or just wondering what your home is worth? Stop by for a complimentary real estate consultation at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library! No appointment needed—just bring your questions and connect with your local real estate experts for honest, helpful guidance. We’ll provide insights on your home’s current market value, downsizing or upsizing strategies, relocation or buying a second home, and suggestions for remodeling to maximize return on investment. Janene Kain, Lisa Patterson, and Michael Farrell are realtors with Century 21 and can be found in the Gozzer Room on the first Wednesday of the month.

Lawyer in the Library (Ages 18+) Thursdays, June 4, July 2, & August 6 (4-6 pm)

The Library is partnering with the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program (IVLP) to provide resources for low-income individuals and families in Idaho who require civil legal services and cannot afford to pay for them. Although they are unable to assist with criminal issues or fee generating cases, these free legal clinics are an opportunity to receive advice and counseling from local attorneys who volunteer their time and expertise. Registration is required and must be done at least 24 hours before the clinic, every first Thursday of the month in the Gozzer Room.

Medicare Workshops (Ages 18+)Wednesday, June 3 (3-4:30 pm)

SHIBA is presenting a series of Medicare health workshops at the library. Join us for any of the series. Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) serves Idahoans on Medicare and those who help them by offering free, unbiased Medicare benefits, information, and assistance through workshops, group presentations, and personal counseling. SHIBA is Idaho’s provider for the federal network of State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs). The program is partially funded by and operated under the authority of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living (ACL).

Backpacking 101: Get Trail-Ready (All Ages) – Thursday, June 4 (5:30 pm)

Curious about backpacking but not sure where to start? Join us for a one-hour Backpacking 101 course at the Library, hosted by Idaho Trails Association and led by experienced long-distance hiker Taylor Tevis. Taylor has completed the coveted “Triple Crown” of hiking—the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, and Continental Divide Trail—and will share practical, real-world knowledge to help you hit the trail with confidence. This beginner-friendly session will cover everything you need to know including trip planning basics & safety tips, how to choose the right gear, what to pack, and intro to beginner snow travel. As an organization dedicated to keeping Idaho’s hiking trails open and accessible, Idaho Trails Association is excited to help more people feel confident getting outside and exploring public lands. Come with questions, leave inspired to explore!

Sunday Matinee Contra Dance (All Ages) – Sunday, June 7 (2-4 pm)

Join us for a free community Contra Dance, sponsored by the Spokane Folklore Society and featuring Arvid Lundin and Deep Roots. Contra dancing is a type of traditional folk dance from New England. Dancers face each other in “contra” lines and move up and down the formation as couples, in figures directed by a caller. The Virginia reel is a dance in this style. You don’t have to be experienced – the caller teaches all the moves! Special clothing is not necessary, and no partner is needed – singles and couples are invited, and families are welcome.

Monday Movie: Jurassic Park Marathon (Ages 13 +) – Mondays (3:30 pm)

Join us for a summer-long movie marathon featuring the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies on the big screen! Bring a friend, enjoy some popcorn, and share the adventure with us. All movies are rated PG 13.

Silent Book Club at Starbucks – Second Tuesdays through August (5-7 pm)

Join the Coeur d’Alene Public Library at the Starbucks on W Prairie Ave (540 W Prairie Ave, CDA) on the second Tuesday of the month for some coffee and reading in companionable silence. Bring your own book, enter for a chance to win a free drink, and join us for an hour of silent reading with time afterwards for optional chatting. No assigned reading and no required discussion. Just sip on some coffee and read what you want; making friends and chatting is optional!

Legacy Planning Workshop (Ages 18+) – Tuesdays, June 9 & 16 (5-6 pm)

Join Jereme Roodhouse from North Idaho Legacy Planning in the Gozzer Room for a workshop on legacy and estate planning. Discover the difference between the government’s plan for when you die and the one you can create. Learn what documents you need to properly protect, manage, and avoid being a burden to your loved ones. Learn how to properly assign and align your beneficiary statements on everything from life insurance to assets and titled property… remember tax follows title! Discover what gaps you may have in your current plan and how to avoid them. Assess how you would like your legacy to be protected from things like catastrophic health events and more.

Idaho Department of Labor Job Fair (Ages 18+) – Wednesday, June 10 (12-3 pm)

The Idaho Department of Labor will be hosting a community job and resource fair where various employers will be on-site, offering a wide range of job opportunities, including full-time, part-time, seasonal, entry-level, and skilled trade positions. Bring copies of your resume and come prepared with questions for future employers. Let’s get you hired!

History Hour Lecture (All Ages)

In this monthly lecture series, join us in the Community Room at the Library for a special presentation with the Museum of North Idaho, featuring a local author or historian who will talk about Idaho’s fascinating heritage.

  • BECOMING IDAHO: How the American Revolution Shaped Our State – Wednesday, June 10 (5:30 pm) – In 1776 Idaho did not exist, yet the victory that resulted from the American Revolution charted a course that literally shaped Idaho. Through the interaction of explorers and Native Americans, farmers and miners, environmentalists and developers, many of the crucial achievements of settling the west were illuminated. Idaho’s unique geography reflects the reality of Revolution era thinkers. Join renown historian Dr. F. Ross Peterson as he describes why Idaho remains a beacon to the nation.
  • In Their Own Words: Emigrant Diaries from the California and Oregon Trails – Wednesday, August 12 (5:30 pm) – Between 1840 and 1860 over 300,000 people headed west by covered wagon with the hope of finding a better life. Whether they were searching for land, gold, or something else, the journey west was difficult. Roughly 1 in 250 emigrants kept a written record of their time on the trails, leaving historians with a rich history left behind by those who lived it. Using the emigrants’ we will follow their journeys across the plains, the mountains, and the deserts of the western United States to settle the west.

Coming Home to Ourselves: Trauma Healing and Reconnection with Nature (Ages 16+) – Friday, June 12 (5 pm)

Join Dr. Toby Hallowitz, NMD, MSOM, LAc and Joseph McCaffrey, LPC, LMHC, MS, MA as they invite participants into a grounding exploration of what it means to come home to themselves and to the living earth. The conversation reflects how early experiences and developmental trauma shape the nervous system, identity, and relationships, drawing on the NeuroAffective Relational Model® to illuminate the adaptive intelligence behind these patterns. They explore how healing emerges through present‑moment connection, regulation, and authentic expression, while also turning to nature as a partner and mirror in the process of remembering who we are beyond conditioning. This gathering offers a space to slow down, listen inwardly, and rediscover a sense of belonging within both the body and the wider web of life.

Pageturners Book Club (Ages 18+) – Tuesday, June 23 (10:15 am)

It is America’s 250th anniversary and to celebrate we are reading on theme for our Pageturners Book Club through the year. This month we are reading “American Spirit” by David Mccullough. “American Spirit” is a collection of McCullough’s essays and speeches that reflects on the people, places, and pivotal moments that shaped the United States—highlighting the importance of history, character, and civic responsibility, and reminding readers what it means to be an engaged American.

Pageturner discussions are lecture-based and open to any adult reader. Books are available at the the Reference Desk.

Resilience Writing Workshop (Ages 16+) – Saturday, June 27, July 25, & August 22 (10:30 am)

Get unstuck from (almost) anything through simple daily practice. This flexible, participant-directed space meets you where you are. Get inspired by writing poetry. Reimagine your multi-genre work. The pen holds more than ink — it becomes a tool of courage, clarity, and resilience-building. With guided prompts, you’ll find words that heal, uplift, motivate, and inspire. Learn how to journal gently through stress or grief. Reframe perceived failure with mindful awareness. Find joy in the journey. Come prepared with a pen and notebook, diary, sketchbook, or $0.99 composition book. Find us upstairs in the Nelson Room.

Dinosaur Felt Friends (Ages 12+) – Saturday, June 27 (11 am)

Pick up your summer take-home craft and enjoy an afternoon of crafting and a movie! Watch The Land Before Time and make your own dinosaur out of felt. All materials will be provided for you to start your craft at the Library and take it home to finish. This craft involves simple sewing and/or glue.

A Journey Through Himalayan India (All Ages) – Wednesday, July 1 & 8 (5:30 pm)

Join us on a journey across the world as our speaker, Rinkal Saini introduces us to the cultural, spiritual, and natural beauty of Himalayan India. Through real-life stories, historical background, and travel photography, we will explore sacred towns such as Rishikesh and Haridwar, learn about Indian festivals, understand the role of the Ganges River, discover Himalayan wildlife, and gain insights into yoga’s cultural roots. Week 1 is Discovering Himalayan India, focusing on the landscapes, culture, spirituality, and wildlife of the region. Week 2 is Exploring Rajasthan, taking us to the desert state with a focus on life and traditions, art, history, bird sanctuaries, and tiger reserves. This free event is open to all ages, and anyone interested in world cultures, spirituality, travel, and global understanding.

Faults! Lava Flows! Glaciers! Floods! (All Ages)- Wednesday, August 5 (5:30 pm)

Unearth the story of the landscape we inhabit with Farragut Park Ranger Errin Bair and her dad, retired science teacher Jon Bair, as they dig into the geologic history of our area. Learn how faults, lava flows, glaciers, and floods shaped the landscape that we see today. A quick and dirty overview that will leave you wanting to learn more!

Fossilized Leaf Imprints (Ages 14+) – Saturday, August 8 & August 22 (11 am)

In this hands-on workshop, we will use the unique shapes and veins of real plants to create a “fossil” record by imprinting leaves into air-dry clay. Participants will roll, press, and cut clay to create botanical-inspired trinket dishes, wall hangings, or ornaments. We will be making our clay creations during the August 8 session and decorating on August 22. All supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring any leaves or foliage they may want to use or share.

Houseplant Swap (Ages 14+) – Saturday, July 11 (1 pm)

Do you have a green thumb or simply want to add some life to your living space? Join us at the library for a special event where you can swap houseplant cuttings with fellow plant enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just getting started, this event is perfect for everyone. Bring your houseplant cuttings to share and discover new varieties to take home. No cuttings? No problem! The library will provide a selection of cuttings, so you can join in the fun even if you don’t have any to bring. Bring a friend and let’s grow together!

Jurassic Jungles: DIY Terrariums (Ages 14+) – Saturday, July 18 (1-3 pm)

Step back in time and build your own prehistoric world! Get your hands dirty and learn the basics of terrarium construction—from layering drainage pebbles and charcoal to selecting the perfect mosses and ferns. To bring your ancient ecosystem to life, we’ll provide a variety of miniature dinosaur figurines to “roam” your new green world. While all materials will be provided, participants are welcome to bring any unique glassware or jars they want to build their terrarium in.

Prehistoric Photobomb: Dinosaur Collage Art (All-Ages) – Saturday July 25 (1-3 pm)

Turn ordinary pictures into extraordinary art and create your own prehistoric story using recycled materials. In this all-ages workshop, participants will use magazines, prints of classic art, old books, and other recycled materials to create playful dinosaur or monster collages. Inspired by the trend of adding unexpected creatures to thrift-store paintings, this hands-on program encourages creativity while exploring composition, color, and storytelling through visual art. All materials provided.

San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers (All Ages)– Tuesday, July 28 (5-6:30 pm)

Join us for a free concert featuring the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers. Formed in 1986 when renowned fiddler Alasdair Fraser placed an advertisement in a local newspaper looking for people interested in sharing Scottish fiddle music, their small group of enthusiasts has since has grown to over 250 members. Most live in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, but there are members from all over California and beyond, even some overseas. Local Coeur d’Alene musicians will be performing with the SFSF in several locations in town this same week. Join us in the Community Room for a lively evening of music!

  • Fraud Awareness (Ages 16+)– Thursday, July 30 (10 am) -Join Global Credit Union to learn how to protect yourself from financial loss and stress in today’s digital landscape. Explore common types of fraud like phishing & skimming and learn how scammers constantly adapt to prevention measures. Gain insights about credit monitoring, the BBB Scam Tracker, online account security, and steps to take if you fall victim to fraud. Attendees will receive handouts and have the opportunity to ask questions. Find us in the Gozzer Room.
  • Smart Money (Ages 16+)- Thursday, July 30 (5 pm) – Join Global Credit Union for an adult financial literacy class focusing on intermediate topics such as budget basics, establishing good savings habits, understanding your credit report and the cost of credit, retirement investing, and more! Coeur d’Con Reading Fest (All-Ages) – Saturday, August 15, 10-5pm

Come read all day long! Enjoy a variety of passive, drop-in activities (designed by TLC) happening throughout the library—stop by anytime and participate at your own pace. It’s also a great chance to work on (or finish up) your Summer Reading Challenge while you’re here. Feel free to come dressed in cosplay; everyone who participates will be entered to win hourly door prize drawings. The Coeur d’Alene Symphony will be here playing music, adding to the atmosphere as you read, explore, and connect. Hang out with fellow fans, share recommendations, discuss your favorite fandoms, and be part of a fun, welcoming all-day experience!

Join us at the library for an archaeology-themed mystery party, where buried secrets, puzzling clues, and unexpected twists await discovery. Step into the role of an investigator as you piece together fragments of the past to unravel a strange and intriguing mystery. Was it an ancient artifact gone missing? A long-lost discovery with hidden implications? Not everything is as it seems.

Participants will explore, question, and collaborate in a light, immersive experience inspired by the world of archaeology. Whether you love mysteries, history, or just a good puzzle, this program offers a fun and engaging way to put your sleuthing skills to the test.

Legacy Planning Workshop (Ages 18+) – Tuesdays, September 1 & 8 (5-6 pm)

Join Jereme Roodhouse from North Idaho Legacy Planning in the Gozzer Room for a workshop on legacy and estate planning. Discover the difference between the government’s plan for when you die and the one you can create. Learn what documents you need to properly protect, manage, and avoid being a burden to your loved ones. Learn how to properly assign and align your beneficiary statements on everything from life insurance to assets and titled property… remember tax follows title! Discover what gaps you may have in your current plan and how to avoid them. Assess how you would like your legacy to be protected from things like catastrophic health events and more.
