Author Susan Snyder Lee will be at the Library for an signing for her book “Mathew Hayden: A Man with a Fast Horse”. Books will be available for purchase.

Susan Lee was born in Wallace, Idaho and her parents moved to Post Falls where she attended elementary and high school.  At the University of Idaho, she received  B.S. and M.S. degrees.  After graduation, she taught for a year in Boise and then joined the Department of Defense with teaching positions in Cuba, Germany, and England. She met her husband, an American military pilot, and they became stationed in North Carolina and Kansas where they raised their three children. This was interrupted by two years in Malaysia where she continued to teach school.  Susan and John eventually returned to North Idaho in 2002.

The story of Mathew A. Hayden begins in Ireland. Mat left home to escape the famine when he was 15 years old.  He earned citizenship by serving in the Army as a Dragoon during Western expansion.  When he mustered out in Nebraska, he joined a wagon train as a teamster and guard to the pioneers. He arrived in Oregon City and soon purchased property near Fort Vancouver in 1858 to build an Inn.  He continued working as a teamster supplying regional forts. In 1860 Mat saw an opportunity at Fort Colville where he obtained his first Homestead. When Camp Coeur d’Alene was established, he purchased railroad land to farm on a lake six miles to the North.  He saw opportunities near Mission City and established another farm to grow crops.  He built his home and signed a contract with the Jesuits to grow hay for Fort Sherman. Mat was a significant early pathfinder whose name is etched into the history of North Idaho.
