altThe libraries in the Cooperative Information Network now offer access to free downloadable music through its member websites.alt

Through the Freegal Music Service CIN patrons can access more than 3 million songs, including the Sonny Music catalog of artists. Choices include more than 10,000 music labels from 65 different countries.

Under the terms of the agreement with the Library Ideas network, registered CIN card holders can download up to three Freegal Music tracks in the MP3 format each week at no direct cost. The library will underwrite the purchase of the music that the card holders may then keep.

In order to access the music, patrons will need to download free mobile apps from such sites as the Apple App Store and Google Play. The Freegal website can also be accessed through the websites of CIN member libraries or through the main CIN website:http://www.cinlibraries.org/.

The  libraries of CIN share a computer catalog, circulation services and a common library card in order to provide patrons in North Idaho and eastern Washington with better and more convenient access to library services and materials.

Library Ideas is a global leader in providing digital content to all kinds of libraries, and is located in Fairfax, Va.

Sony Music Entertainment is a global recorded music company with a current roster that includes a broad array of both local artists and international superstars.

For more information call or visit you local CIN library. For a listing of CIN libraries visit the CIN website.

Vacation Reading Keeps Young Minds Active, Ready for School

Your brain is your reading muscle – if you don’t keep it active your mental abilities can weaken.

This can be especially true for children. Teachers know what studies have proven. Children who are actively engaged in reading over the summer break retain more of what they have learned and experience much less “brain drain.”alt

In short, kids who read go back to school in the fall ready to learn new material.

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library and all the libraries in our region want to help your family keep reading.

Summer Reading Programs – with the theme “Dig Into Reading” – begin in the Seagraves Children’s Library, on the lower level at 702 E. Front. Ave., on June 17. Programs are designed for ages newborn to 14. Young Adult Summer Reading Programs, for ages 12-18, are also scheduled.

Most programs do not require registration. Even if a child doesn’t attend programs they are welcome to visit the library for a Reading Log. With the log children and can track their reading time and each time they record three hours of reading, or being read to, they can return to the library for a prize.

Students are also invited to vote for their school each time they visit the library through Aug. 31. The school with the most votes earns the right to display the Summer Reading Traveling Trophy in their school library throughout the school year.

Programs and special events for the children this summer include:

► Badger Babies Lap-Sit: (Ages 0 - 2) Tuesdays 10:15-10:45 a.m. and Fridays 10:30-11 a.m., for children and a parent or other caregiver.

Teens have their own Summer Program at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library beginning June 10.

The theme is “Beneath the Surface,” for the young adults, ages 12-18, and it offers a wide variety of activities – a book club, teen crafts, movie nights, gaming tournaments and more.alt

And according to Laura Jenkins, YA Coordinator for the library, teens also have the opportunity to shape programs this summer and for the future.

“Teen volunteering looks great on college and job applications,” she said, “and you get to learn the ins and outs of working at the library.”

Jenkins said that she values the opinions of teens participating in the programs and will help them to make the library their own.

As part of the Summer Program, teens can pick up a reading log at the library and return them for tickets for weekly drawings and for the grand prize drawing on Aug. 2.

YA Summer Programs include:

Teen Book Club: Ages 12-18, 4-5 p.m., June 10 and 24, and July 8 and 22. Participants will select the books for the group based on genres for each session.

Kendama Club: Ages 9-14, Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m., share tricks and techniques for this popular Asian toy. Each time you attend get a ticket for a drawing at the final session for a professional Kendama.

Movie Night at the Library: Ages 13-18, 5 p.m., June 13, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower (PG13);” June 19, “Warm Bodies (PG13);” and June 26, “The Great and Powerful Oz.”

► Teen Gaming Tournaments: All ages, 5 p.m., June 20 and July 18.

► Teen Board Game Nights: All ages, 5 p.m., June 27 and July 25, try your hand at some of the classic borad games.
