Students in Scott DuCoeur’s Second Grade class at the Sorensen Magnet School, took time out from the school’s Field Day activities to present a copy of “Juggling for Jupiter,” to Bette Ammon, Coeur d’Alene Public Library Director. The students created and sold copies of the book to raise money for a school in Africa.

A book created and marketed by a class of Coeur d’Alene second-graders will have a positive impact on a school in Africa.

Scott DuCoeur’s class at the Sorensen Magnet School, took time out from their school’s annual Field Day Thursday, June 4, to present a copy of their book, “Juggling for Jupiter,” to Coeur d’Alene Public Library Director Bette Ammon.

Ammon said the book will be added to the collection so it can be enjoyed in the Seagrave Children’s Library.

DuCoeur said the class was formed into teams to create the book. Teams were assigned the duties of writing, illustrating, cover art, binding and sales. The book was sold at the Farmers’ Market and generated nearly $600 in revenue.

Inspired by the Masai Dancers that visited Sorensen earlier this year, proceeds from the book are going to help the Mountain View Community Center and School in Tanzania. The African school has about 100 students, one teacher and no desks.

DuCoeur said the money raised by the book can purchase about 18 desks.

He said the project was assisted by a parent-advisor, Sharalee Howard.
