Kids don’t always discover books and reading the same way. Just as the “Harry Potter” books and movies got many young people reading, the vivid stories told by the “Star Wars” franchise have also played a role in stirring up imaginations and sending children and teens to libraries and bookstores for more adventure.
The second annual Star Wars Reads Day, Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library – 702 E. Front Ave. – celebrates this link.
Activities will take place in the Community Room and include a costume contest, door prizes, a trivia contest, crafts and refreshments.
The event will also include a visit by Darth Vader and one of his loyal storm troopers – members of Timberline Garrison of the 501st Legion. Founded in 1997 the Legion includes more than 4,000 members worldwide. Its authentically costumed members donate their time to worthwhile charities.
Participants should be aware that the Seventh Street and Front Avenue intersection is likely to still be closed on Oct. 5. Visitors to the library can use a detour that follows Ninth Street off Sherman Avenue and turns west onto either Front or Mullan avenues. Only the Eighth Street entrance to the library is open at this time. To avoid the two-hour parking limit in the upper lot, use the parking areas behind and south of City Hall.
The “Star Wars” franchise began in 1977 with release of the movie “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,” and has since spawned numerous multi-media products including a series of popular sci-fi books and graphic novels.
Children under 6 visiting the library need to be supervised by an adult or a person who is at least 14 even during programs. Children ages 6-9 should be accompanied by someone who is at least 14 who will remain in the building.
Patrons who need accommodation to participate in library programs or services are asked to contact the staff prior to the activity by calling 208-769-2315.
